The $656 million Mega Millions jackpot was split three ways between tickets sold in Kansas, Illinois, and Maryland. The Maryland winners were three public school employees who called themselves 'The Three Amigos.' The Illinois winners were Merle and Patricia Butler of Red Bud, a retired couple. The Kansas winner remained anonymous, as permitted by state law. At the time, this was the largest lottery prize in world history.
