El Gordo — "The Fat One" — is the world's largest lottery by total prize pool, distributing approximately €2.7 billion every Christmas. Unlike US lotteries, the top prize of €4 million per ticket is shared by everyone holding the winning number. Tickets are sold in tenths (décimos) for €20 each, worth €400,000 if winning. Entire towns and villages often share the prize, creating communal celebrations across Spain. This is fundamentally different from US jackpot lotteries.
